Delegation: How to Trust Your Team and Boost Your Productivity

As a mom who’s also a business owner, you likely wear many hats and juggle numerous responsibilities.

From managing your household to running your business, it can be overwhelming to keep up with everything on your plate. That's where delegation comes in - it's more than just asking for help, it's a way to show your team, if you have one, or those around you that you trust their abilities and recognize their strengths.

Here are four reasons why moms who are business owners should delegate more often:

Creates Time

Delegation frees up time, which is essential when you have a lot on your plate. By delegating tasks that are not within your core competencies or that can be done by someone else, you free up time to focus on the things that only you can do, such as growing your business or spending quality time with your family.

You may even want to consider outsourcing care tasks to create more time, such as cleaning. By hiring a cleaning service to come in once a week to take care of deep cleaning tasks like scrubbing the bathroom and mopping the floors, you’re freeing up hours of time and energy that can be reallocated to your business and/or baby.

Increases Trust

When you delegate tasks to others, you show them that you trust their abilities and that you believe they can do a great job. Trust is a crucial component of any successful team or partnership, and by delegating, you can help build that trust and foster a stronger relationship with those around you.

Trust is not just built within your business, it can also be built at home. When my clients start working with me, they’re usually doing everything, for everyone. This is not just a problem for moms, this is also a problem for partners or family members as well because they aren’t learning how to help. Open up a discussion and decide what tasks can be handed off (ex. grocery shopping or managing the family schedule). Then comes the hard part, trust them to do it and accept that it may not be exactly your way. By trusting them to handle important tasks, you are showing them that you value their abilities and believe in their skills.

Helps Others Develop Skills

Delegation gives others the opportunity to try new things and develop their skills. By giving others a chance to take on tasks that are not typically in their job description, you can help them broaden their skillset and gain experience in new areas. This can be beneficial for both your business and your team members, as they become more versatile and can take on new challenges in the future.

The same goes for folks at home. You might be more organized or better at meal prepping, but no one else can be expected to learn if they aren’t given the chance. It may not be pretty at first, but you’re only good at the various tasks because you’ve had a lot of practice. Support people in your life to get good at the many tasks on your plate.

Discover a Better Way

Delegating tasks to others can bring new perspectives and ideas to the table. Having a new set of eyes on a project or task can lead to new ideas and more efficient ways of doing things. When you delegate, you open up the possibility of discovering a better way of doing things, which can ultimately benefit your business and make everyone's job easier.

Believe it or not, the way you’ve always done things is not the only way. Often times, it takes shaking up the systems in order to find better ways of doing things. Have your partner or a family member take over meal planning for the week. They may come up with new recipes or meal ideas that you wouldn't have thought of, and it takes one task off your plate.

As a mom who is also a solopreneur, you may not have a team to delegate to. However, that doesn't mean you can't delegate at all. Here are a few tips for how to delegate effectively as a solopreneur:

  • Outsource: Consider outsourcing tasks that are not within your core competencies, such as bookkeeping, social media management, or website design. You can hire a freelancer or virtual assistant to take on these tasks, freeing up your time and allowing you to focus on what you do best.

  • Automate: Look for ways to automate tasks using tools like email marketing software or scheduling apps. This can help you save time and streamline your processes.

  • Network: Build relationships with other entrepreneurs and solopreneurs in your industry. You may be able to collaborate on projects or refer clients to each other, which can help you both grow your businesses and free up time.

  • Prioritize: Make a list of your most important tasks and focus on those first. Anything that is not a high priority can be delegated or put on hold until you have more time to devote to it.

By delegating tasks, you free up time, build trust, develop skills, and discover better ways of doing things. As a mom who is also a business owner, it's essential to recognize the value of delegation and use it to your advantage. It's not just about asking for help - it's about building relationships, fostering growth, and achieving success.
