Overcoming Perfectionism: A Guide for Mom Business Owners

As a mom and business owner (an MBO), you know that there are many expectations placed upon you. You want to be the best possible mom, while also running a successful business. I get it.

These high expectations that you put on yourself can lead to perfectionism, which can be both a blessing and a curse. On one hand, it pushes you to strive for excellence and reach your goals. On the other hand, it can be paralyzing, preventing you from taking risks and trying new things.

In this blog post, we'll explore perfectionism, how it can impact your business and personal life, and how my coaching program designed for moms struggling to balance family and career, can help you overcome it.

Why Perfectionism is Harmful for Mom Business Owners

Perfectionism is the belief that anything less than perfect is unacceptable. This can lead to a fear of failure and a reluctance to take risks. You may feel like you have to be perfect in both your personal and professional life. This can be overwhelming, and it can lead to burnout and stress.

It can also lead to:

  • Procrastination: When you're afraid of not doing something perfectly, it can be tempting to procrastinate or avoid tasks altogether.

  • Self-Doubt: Striving for perfectionism can lead to constant self-doubt and questioning whether you're good enough.

  • Fear of Failure: Perfectionism can also lead to a fear of failure, which can hold you back from taking risks and trying new things in your business.

That being said, perfectionism isn't always a bad thing. It can motivate you to work harder, set higher standards, and achieve more.

The key is finding a healthy balance between striving for excellence and being realistic about what is achievable.

How to Overcome Perfectionism as a Mom Business Owner

I like to describe myself as a recovering perfectionist because it’s something I’m slowly mitigating in my own life. We’re always a work in progress and a masterpiece all at the same time. Keep that in mind as you try a few of the strategies listed below for overcoming perfectionism and achieving more balance and success in your business and personal life:

  1. Embrace Imperfection: Accept that perfectionism is not attainable and that making mistakes is a natural part of the learning process. Remember that mistakes can be valuable opportunities for growth and learning.

  2. Set Realistic Expectations: Set realistic expectations for yourself and your business. Identify what's most important and focus on those areas, rather than trying to do everything perfectly.

  3. Delegate: Delegating tasks to others can help you free up time and energy to focus on your core competencies and grow your business. Consider hiring a virtual assistant or outsourcing tasks that don't require your expertise.

  4. Practice Self-Care: Taking care of yourself is essential for overcoming perfectionism. Make time for activities that you enjoy and that help you relax, such as exercise, meditation, or reading.

One of the biggest challenges of perfectionism is that it can be hard to let go of control. Delegating tasks or asking for help can be difficult when you feel like no one else can do it as well as you can. This can lead to overworking and burnout. My coaching program helps moms overcome this by teaching strategies for delegating effectively and trusting your team (both business teams and home teams).

Another aspect of perfectionism is the fear of making mistakes. As an MBO, you may worry that one mistake could jeopardize everything you've worked for. This fear can hold you back from taking risks and trying new things. It’s important to embrace imperfection and see failure as an opportunity for growth and learning.

Perfectionism can impact your personal life as well. You may feel like you have to be the perfect mom, always present and available for your children. This can be exhausting, and it can lead to guilt and burnout. Letting our children see that we’re imperfect as moms helps them to realize that it’s okay for them to be imperfect as well. We’re always acting as role models to our children so when we can embrace imperfection for ourselves, they can too.

It’s important to find a healthy balance between work and family life, so you can be present for both.
